The basics of video shooting and video editing!

2024-01-31

Welcome back, everyone!

Thanks for dropping by the blog again!

As interest in video editing has increased these days, interest in video shooting seems to have naturally increased as well.

In fact, for a good video, high-quality footage is really important. 😊

Just as delicious food comes from quality ingredients, great videos come from excellent footage.

Today I would like to explain the basics of video shooting and editing.

If you understand what I'm going to tell you this time, you will be able to learn how to shoot video for easy editing

and how to edit video by making good use of the footage! 😆

Before that, let me tell you about the core concept of this post:

The basis of video shooting can be said to be layout.

Layout refers to the arrangement of the subject, or composition.

In other words, the quality of the video varies depending on how the subject is placed on the screen.

This is one of the most important parts because the degree of freedom in editing also changes accordingly.

So, shall we stop with the introduction and go into detail about the basics of video editing and video shooting?

01 The most basic video composition! The Rule of 1/3

02 If you’re not sure, let’s use the guidelines first!

03 The center always has power! The power of the center!

Part 1. The most basic video composition! The Rule of 1/3

The most basic video shooting composition is the rule of thirds.

When the top, bottom, left, and right sides of the screen are divided into 1/3, four dots appear at the center point.

Placing an important subject at this point makes it easier for viewers to understand the information.

At this time, of course, the subject could be a person or an object, right?

However, even though this video composition is basic, it does not solve everything.

Since the camera foreground contains a lot of information such as the position of the lighting and the composition of the camera,

the harmony may be broken if there is even a slight change in each condition.

Therefore, if you only focus on subject composition, you may get unsatisfactory results even if you follow the 1/3 rule.

Don't forget that the rule of thirds is one of the many conditions for smooth shooting! 😊

Part 2. If you’re not sure, let’s use the guidelines first!

Just as you looked for guidelines when using GOM Mix for the first time, guidelines also exist for video shooting.

If we look at the history of video, we can say that video came from photography, and photography came from painting.

The most important thing in a painting is composition.

And what cannot be left out in composition is ‘line’.

You need to focus people's attention through lines. It's called a 'guideline'.

Among them, the one you can use is the vanishing point line.

A vanishing point line is a line that points toward the center point, as shown in the photo above.

Even if the subject is small, if you frame the image with a vanishing point line and place the subject in the center,

people's eyes will naturally be directed towards the subject.

That's the power of vanishing point lines! 😆

Editing footage that does not take these aspects into account can become very cumbersome.

This is because some transformations, such as enlarging or reducing the image, may be necessary depending on the location of the subject.

As with all video editing programs, if you modify the footage, the quality may be low or it may look awkward.

Taking these conditions into consideration during the filming stage is a way to make editing easier.

If you get the initial composition right, it is easier to edit general cuts,

so it can be helpful to imagine how you will edit it before shooting. 😊

Part 3. The center always has power! The power of the center!

Usually, 'If I place the subject in the center, wouldn't the composition be tacky and uninteresting?' You are thinking about it.

This is the most common misunderstanding in video editing!

If you place the subject in the center, it will have a power that cannot be felt in other positions.

Center layout is one of the angles of choice for moments when you need to emphasize or show off the subject itself.

If you think about editing in general, a center composition is often used to show that you have arrived at a tourist attraction.

Also, the central location is where information can be delivered clearly.

This is because information about events placed in the center becomes information that viewers cannot miss.

Up to this point, we have provided you with the basics of video shooting and editing.

Do you understand now?

I've included the information you need to know first when you go out to film a video right away.

Before you start filming a video, you need to have some idea about editing.

When you start filming, please remember to take the cut editing environment into consideration.

Even in everyday life, when taking pictures of someone, the concept of shooting composition becomes an important part.

If you follow the tips I mentioned today, you will be able to hear from your friends and family that you are good at taking photos/videos!

Although it is important to know this theoretically, the best way to compose a video well is to practice it yourself! 😆

Even if you don’t have an expensive filming device, you can practice with your smartphone. I recommend trying it from time to time.

And there will be times when the cuts you envisioned during filming and the cuts you make during editing are different.

If you organize the problems step by step, you will soon find that you can easily handle everything from shooting to editing.

Well, we'll come back with another tip!

See you in the next post! BYE~😆
